Training Types & Descriptions

Many KVCC Workforce Trainings are offered at no or low cost to participants thanks to grant funding provided through the Harold Alfond Center for the Advancement of Maine’s Workforce.

These grants match 50% of training cost – up to $1200 – for employees of Maine Workforce Development Compact businesses and organizations. Learn how to join the Compact here:



3D Printing (Online)

Learn how to design and 3D print your own models and integrate 3D printing into your own classroom!

HARDWARE
Receive guidance to unbox and set up your new 3D printer. You’ll learn how to operate, maintain, and repair the printer, and you will become familiar with all of the built-in features of the printer. In addition, you’ll also download and install the Bambu Studio software program and use it to prepare models for printing. Finally, you will download, prepare, and print models from online model repositories. Includes: 3D Printer and Roll of Filament

DESIGN
Learn about and use free, web-based 3D modeling software platforms like Tinkercad and SculptGL. You will create a chess pawn, a two color badge, a repeating design, a complex shape, an alien head, buttons, bookmarks, rings, and more. You will also learn how to embed a Tinkercad design, upload a photo to Tinkercad, make your design public, and add a custom font.

CURRICULUM INTEGRATION
Explore examples of how 3D printing has been integrated into the K-12 curriculum and develop your own strategy for incorporating the technology into your classroom. This training is equivalent to 15 CEUs. See our instructor give an overview of the training here.

*A Mac or Windows computer is required to access all of the software for this training.

This training is delivered online, through a flexible model. There are no specific scheduled meetings, but the instructor monitors your progress daily, is available via Zoom for individualized support, and will gladly meet with you in person by appointment.

Bartending (In Person)

Learn the basics of professional bartending and mixology and its application in restaurants, clubs, and function facilities!

Whether you are taking this course to find a full-time/part-time job, or you are taking it for your own personal enrichment, this course will be fun and enjoyable. The 7-week course will introduce you not only to mixology, but appropriate glassware, the use of basic bartending tools, over 100 basic and fancy drink recipes, how to cut fruit and decorate cocktails, basic laws concerning customers, liability and regulations of the bartender and the property owner, ways to increase sales and tips, and so much more.

Business Entrepreneurship (In Person)

Learn the basics of starting your own business, including developing a business plan, figuring out your target market, projecting finances, and designing a business pitch.

You would be a good candidate for this FREE training if you:

  • Started work on a business idea, but would like help moving it forward, or
  • Sell products or a service on the side, but are thinking about expanding, or
  • Have a current business but would like some more formal education on these topics and more!

Take part in the small business pitch competition as the capstone of the training for a chance to win a stipend for your small business!

This hands-on bootcamp introduces foundational cooking techniques—including simmering, frying, roasting, and grilling—while also strengthening your confidence with kitchen measurements, recipe conversions, sanitation, and professional standards.

Whether you’re exploring culinary arts for the first time or preparing for entry-level kitchen work, this training helps you step into the food-service industry with skill and readiness.

TIPS Alcohol Certification (In Person)

Gain the certification needed to safely serve alcohol the patrons.

TIPS is a dynamic, skills-based training program designed to prevent intoxication, drunk driving and underage drinking by enhancing the fundamental “people skills” of servers, sellers and consumers of alcohol. TIPS gives individuals the knowledge and confidence they need to prevent alcohol-related tragedies and to create a safer work environment.

Child Language & Literacy Dev. (In Person/Hybrid)

This training serves as an introduction to language and literacy development in children, from birth to age eight.

This course focuses on the components of language knowledge and writing processes of young children. Students will gain knowledge of recommended teaching practices for specific age groups and the resources needed for planning developmentally appropriate experiences.

EMT-B Training (In Person/Hybrid)

This free training provides you with the essential knowledge and hands-on skills needed to respond confidently in emergency situations and prepares you for advanced levels of EMS education!

Understand and practice real-world prehospital care by covering airway and respiratory management, CPR, oxygen administration, bleeding control, and the treatment of shock, fractures, and soft-tissue injuries. You’ll learn the principles of spinal immobilization, triage, and safe patient transport, along with comprehensive assessment and care techniques for medical, obstetrical, pediatric, environmental, and behavioral emergencies.

The course also builds foundational patient-assessment skills and includes training in the use of Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs), meeting the requirements for EMT licensure in the State of Maine.

Phlebotomy Training (In Person/Hybrid)

Become a certified phlebotomist as you gain knowledge, practice new skills, and transition from the classroom to the workforce! This free training consists of a three-phase sequence dealing with the theory, practice, lab and clinical experience to prepare you for certification.

Phase 1: online learning will focus on infection control and safety practices, phlebotomy equipment and techniques, anatomy and physiology of the circulatory system, specimen preparation and handling and the ethical and legal aspects of phlebotomy. Practice proper procedures in the collection of blood specimens by venipuncture in a classroom (lab) setting.

Phase 2: students will perform venipuncture and the associated labs at a hospital or a practice-based laboratory for 100 hours.

Phase 3: prepares each student to sit for the ASCP Certification.

Mechanized Logging Ops & Forest Trucking (In Person)

Earn hands-on experience within the forest environment and expand your skillset in this dynamic industry-recognized program. Through this training, gain a competitive edge in securing employment and advancing your career while working in the outdoors, anywhere in Maine, with the tools for higher earning potential.

Through this summer training located on the KVCC Alfond Campus, you will:

  • Learn harvesting laws, environmental regulations and practices pertaining to forestry, boundary lines, basal areas and vernal pools.
  • Earn your CDL-A permit and preparation for state driving exam.
  • Recognize industry-recognized safety certifications and demonstration of competency of all required logging operation safety standards.
  • Understand Maine’s forest economy, marketing, utilization, equipment, logging techniques and other industry components.
  • Gain a cooperative team approach towards mechanical forest operations to accomplish the goals of selection, harvesting, transporting, and delivery to markets.

15-Hour NEC Code Update 2023 (Online)

Get the most up-to-date understanding and certification for the National Electrical Code from this online training.

This course meets the requirements for the State of Maine 15-hour code up-date required with the 2023 NEC code changes. The course is delivered completely online and you may start and stop to complete the work at your own pace, by a set final due date. There is an instructor available for questions via email. Upon completion, you will receive an official certificate from KVCC. Students will need to purchase their own copy of the 2023 National Electrical Code book to complete the course.

45-Hour NEC Code Training (In Person)

Get the most up-to-date understanding and certification for the National Electrical Code and State of Maine code requirements from this in-person training.

This course will cover the major articles of the current edition of the National Electrical Code. Examples of its application to actual wiring installations will be included. Particular emphasis will be placed on chapters 1, 2, 3, 4, and 9. Material covered is designed to help prepare the student for State Electrical Licensing.

CDL-B Training (In Person)

This CDL Training course prepares students to meet all federal and state class B driving licensure requirements necessary to begin a successful and lucrative career in the truck driving industry.

Located in Readfield, Maine, this CDL course consists of 42 hours of classroom and 30 hours of range and road driving instruction. Applicants are required to pass a drug test and DOT physical examination prior to acceptance to the program. EPA 608 Refrigerant Review & Exam (In Person)

This offering includes reading/preparation material, a live review session, and cost of the exam. It is not intended to be formal refrigeration training.

The EPA 608 certification exam prepares technicians for the following four certifications: Type I: Repair of small appliances, Type II: High pressure refrigerants (i.e. Mini Split Heat Pumps), and Type III: Low pressure appliances (chillers), or Universal. Technicians who take this course should be familiar with the vapor-compression refrigeration cycle and common service equipment and procedures.

Heat Pump Installer (In Person)

This 40-hour course meets Efficiency Maine Heat Pump Installer Training requirements needed to qualify for rebates, financing, and sales leads.

Using both classroom and hands-on lab instruction, this training covers how to professionally install heat pump indoor units, outdoor units, and line sets. Students will get hands-on experience installing these state-of-the-art HVAC systems that are revolutionizing heating and cooling. Students successfully completing this course and KVCC’s separately offered EPA Section 608 Refrigerant Handling Course will qualify to work for the hundreds of Maine contractors installing tens of thousands of heat pumps each year. KVCC is an Efficiency Maine Registered Trainer for Heat Pump Installer Training. Students will need to come to class prepared with tools from the tool list linked above.*New content – covers Low GWP-A2L flammable refrigerant training.

Efficiency Maine Scholarship – up to $500 after completing KVCC Heat Pump Installer training for registered Efficiency Maine vendors and their employees.

High Pressure Boiler (Online)

Expand your skillset in HVAC with KVCC’s High Pressure Boiler training online sessions! This online training is aligned with Maine operator license requirements and provides trainees with half of the state’s time requirement for licensure.

This 45-hour training which provides participants with the knowledge and techniques to operate a boiler steam generating plant in a safe and efficient manner. Basics of boiler design and control are emphasized as well as the importance of feed water treatment. Topics include day-to-day operations, steam turbine control, power generation, and environmental control parameters to meet emission requirements.

The safe handling and combustion of natural gas, fuel oil, coal, and wood fuel is covered. This course will also place emphasis on code requirements. The course offers a practical approach to power plant operation and is designed to prepare the student for the Maine licensing exam. This course will give the student 450 hours towards the 900 hours needed to sit for the Maine Licensing Exam (an additional 450 hours in the field is required in order to sit for this exam). This class will also be beneficial for individuals preparing for their 3rd or 4th class engineer’s license.

Precision Machinist Internship (In Person)

This 10-week paid internship gives you the skills to work as a full-time machinist with GE Bangor. Earn $19/hour for 40-hours per week as you learn on-the-job with KVCC trainers and GE Bangor machinists.

All trainees who successfully complete the KVCC Precision Machining Training Program are guaranteed an interview for full-time Machinist positions at GE Bangor with a starting pay rate of $27.26-$28.50 plus benefits upon hire, and an additional increase upon completing the probationary period.

Qualifications & Requirements:

  • High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent
  • 18 years of age or older
  • Legally authorized to work in the US
  • Pass background check and drug screen
  • MUST be able to work 5am-3:30pm, Mon-Thurs, for the internship and night/weekend shifts if hired full-time at the end of the internship
  • Able to commute to GE Bangor facility

Workforce Welding (In Person)

Learn the skills and techniques you need to enter Maine’s welding industry with Workforce Welding! With guidance from industry professionals Brian Jonah and Neil Pitcher, KVCC’s Welding courses will provide you with the knowledge and skill to excel with a career in the Welding industry.

WORKFORCE WELDING I
This 45-hour training will introduce students to the basics of welding, focusing on safety and principles of welding. Students will use the SMAW welding process (stick welding) and will learn to make minor repairs on potential work projects.

WORKFORCE WELDING II
This 45-hour training builds on the skills gained in Workforce Welding I, integrating more advanced techniques and building on the SMAW welding process. Trainees will also learn FCAW and cutting with Oxy-Acetylene torches. Successful trainees will be prepared to take the American Welding Society (AWS) Certification exam.

ALUMINUM WELDING
The 20-hour training introduces and builds on the Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW) process. This training will work to help trainees meet the needs of their specific employment or certification goals.

To receive a full refund, a trainee must cancel/drop their enrollment or registration more than 3 business days before the start of the course.

• A partial refund of 50% of the course fee will be refunded, if the trainee drops within 3 business days prior to the course start date.

• No refund will be given after the course start date.

Kennebec Valley Community College reserves the right to cancel a course for any reason. In the event Kennebec Valley Community College cancels a training, the course fee will be refunded in full.
