The learning commons is a “one-stop” location with Academic, Library and Technology services all in one location.  Kennebec Valley Community College has two campuses, each one housing a Learning Commons!

Locations and hours listed below:

Lunder Learning Commons, Fairfield Campus
Monday – Friday: 7:00am to 5:00pm
Saturday & Sunday: Closed

Averill Learning Commons, Hinckley Campus
Monday – Thursday: 8:30am to 4:00pm
Friday –  Sunday: Closed

The mission of the Learning Commons at KVCC is to provide an inviting and supportive environment that facilitates student centered learning and creates community.

The learning commons vision centers on the creation of a dynamic learning environment that provides the KVCC community a flexible and collaborating space that responds to individual learning styles and promotes lifelong learning.

Academic Coaching

The Learning Commons has a variety of academic coaching tools for students:

  • Take the Learning Style Inventory to learn what kind of learner you are
  • Receive academic coaching handouts
  • Test taking skills:
    • Note taking skills
    • Time management skills and more!

The MathPort at Lunder (MathPort@L)

The MathPort offers free math tutoring to all KVCC students. Academic support is offered for students currently taking a math class, or those preparing to take the TEAS exam.

The drop-in hours change each semester based on the schedule of math classes. Individual appointments can also be made by contacting the Math Learning Specialist, Sarah Sirois – ssirois@kvcc.me.edu

Study Spaces

Lunder Learning Commons has the following study spaces for students, faculty and staff to use:

Testing/Study Room (capacity 4 people) – Lunder 113: This room is used as a testing room but when not in use can be used as a quiet study room.  This room contains a computer for use.  Reserve at the LC information desk.

Open Study areas throughout the commons – single to group areas/tables

Averill Learning Commons has the following study spaces for students, faculty and staff to use:

Testing/Study Room (capacity 6 people) – Averill 205: This room is used as a testing room.  Reserve at the LC information desk.

Averill Lounge (capacity 4 people) – An open eating/study space with a refrigerator, microwave, and Keurig machine

Open Study areas – Averill 203: Spaces throughout the commons – group tables with single seating available

Tutoring is free to all KVCC students.  Request a tutor here.  If you have questions, please contact lc@kvcc.me.edu for more information.

Peer Tutors & Academic Coaches

  • Students must complete an application process to become a tutor or academic coach.
  • Tutors and Academic Coaches must:
    • be a current student in good academic standing (overall GPA of a 3.0 or higher) and maintain their academic standing
    • have completed the specific course with a grade of B or higher
    • have faculty approval or provide a transcript from a previous college indicating good academic standing and the appropriate grade for the course.
  • Academic Coaches must:
    • be a current student in good academic standing (overall GPA of 3.0 or higher) and maintain their academic standing
    •  have completed one (1) semester – twelve (12) credits of college level work
    • must have effective communication skills as demonstrated in a faculty/staff recommendation
    • have faculty approval.
  • Tutors and Academic Coaches
    • are paid every two (2) weeks
    • payment is based on actual hours worked as shown on submitted bi-weekly time sheets
    • will receive minimum wage (as set by the State of Maine) for their first semester and an increase of $.25 for each subsequent semester worked
    • may be asked to provide assistance to small groups, individuals or workshop settings.
