DESCRIPTION

The Computer Information Systems program at Kennebec Valley Community College offers the following programs of study: Associate in Science Degree in Computer Information Systems, Associate in Science Degree in Geographic Information Systems, Associate in Science Degree in Computer Aided Drafting and Design, and Certificate in Computer Information Systems. All areas of study promote self-motivation and discipline.

Designed with input from the regional business community to prepare students for baccalaureate computer programs and employment opportunities, the Computer Information Systems program provides students with basic and advanced IT (Information Technology) skills. Graduates are prepared for continuing IT career education and/or entry-level positions in what is projected to be one of the fastest growing occupations in Maine and the nation.

PROGRAM MISSION

The mission of the Computer Information Systems Degree program is to prepare students through classroom lectures, laboratory experiences, and internships; students are prepared to accelerate in their field of study whether they are transferring to a four-year degree program at another institute, or entering the workforce. This is reflected in all of the courses required to complete the degree, whether they are general education courses or relate directly to their major.

The mission of the Geographic Information Systems Degree option is to provide students with a thorough grounding in the theories, concepts and skills needed to apply GIS effectively and correctly in a variety of substantive areas, while simultaneously developing proficiency in the use of industry-standard GIS software products. KVCC degree recipients will have the background and skills necessary to successfully accomplish GIS projects and support GIS operations in a variety of areas in the public and private sectors which could include infrastructure and facility management, urban and regional planning, environmental conservation, market research, site selection, real estate, civil engineering, or natural resource exploration.

The mission of the CADD program is to prepare individuals to apply technical skills and advanced computer software and hardware to the creation of graphic representations and simulations in support of engineering projects. Instruction in engineering graphics, two-dimensional and three-dimensional engineering design, solids modeling, engineering animation, computer-aided drafting (CAD), computer-aided design (CADD), and auto-CAD techniques is included.

EDUCATIONAL OUTCOMES

Upon successful completion of the Computer Information Systems program, the graduate is expected to:

  1. Be a person who utilizes resources and technology to find information both personally and professionally in computer-related fields
  2. Be a competent professional who displays the computer skills and interpersonal skills necessary to speak and write clearly, effectively and persuasively.
  3. Be a critical thinker who uses technology to analyze and solve problems in the computer field.
  4. Be a self-starter who uses theory, facts and principles learned in the classroom and through internships to accomplish a given goal without direction.
