META ATTENDEES: Melissa Mitchell WCCC Louise Grant NESCom Tori Passerman USM Ron Bolstridge CMCC Betsy Harris NMCC Stacy Green EMCC Laurie Friberg UMF Sam Alderete NCO Ron Poulin SNHU Sharon Roix UMPI Peter Hickey USVA Bo Yerxa SNHU Chris Ike YCCC Teresa Smith KVCC Doreen Rogan YCCC Joseph Atkins Colby Candace Ward EMCC GREETING: Greg Sweat Dean of Students and Director of Admissions welcomed the members and offered the college at any time that we need a room. He also told us about the new student center. INTRODUCTION: An introduction of members was done. DISCUSSION: It was discussed that Peter Hicky or Bob Heally may do a presentation about the ACE website in the future. Peter Hickey requested information on the “Title” of the person who does transfer credits at each institution. APPROVAL OF MINUTES: The minutes of the last meeting were accepted after changing Don Sweeny’s name. GUEST SPEAKER: was Averil Hevey-Doucette, from NETA and Salem State where she is the Assistant Director of Transfer Admission and Articulation and is on the Governing Board of NETA Best Practices. Averil was a transfer student herself and discussed the Code of Ethics. “NETA Code of Ethics” The code of Ethics arose as a result of realizing that NETA did not have their own code but was using other organizational codes. The result was to formulate a code from the appropriate parts of other codes. The new code had an original “Statement of Purpose.” It took a lot of work to come up with the proper wording and they tried to create conciseness of code. Point 2 had FERPA training for interpretation. Point 4 was a major discussion and most controversial. It deals with “What is the concept of asserting yourself?” and is intentionally open to interpretation. Discussion ensued on the parameters of probation vs the appeal process and where do you draw the line between individual process and direct ethical concern. The outcome: “Simply let the powers to be know that you don’t agree.” Point 5 ensures equal information and process for all students. Point 6 has huge questions in terms of separating personal bias and how to provide fair and factual information. There is a great deal of controversy created in transfers from different accrediting agencies or SOC agreements. There was some discussion about reauthorization. Point 7 Know the difference between law and ethics. Point 8 Was the most controversial of all because of the differences between colleges and procedures. NEXT NETA MEETING will be held the last week in April 2006 at the Wentworth Hotel in Portsmouth N.H. DISCUSSION: ADVANTAGE “U” Discussion ensued about this program involving guaranteed admission from community college to university for Liberal Studies students who complete the Associate Degree. The program helps the process at both institutions with and easier application and application fee waiver at the university. The application to university comes as package with all of the paperwork. The student can register earlier than a new student and at the same time as a “native student.” The student must have an “intent to participate” and for certain university programs, specific GPA must be maintained. Students are closely advised along the way. There may be some additional requirements. The desirable outcome is the creation of a lot more cross enrollment and an increase in retention at the Community College level. NETA UPDATE: Laurie Friberg Laurie passed out applications and talked about the big event which is a conference for professional development for anyone working with transfers. She also discussed some of the interesting topics covered by NETA PORTFOLIOS The Department of Labor held a meeting encouraging portfolio learning based on experiential and the non-transferability of portfolio from school to school. This is a subject that will arise often in the future. Some schools do not offer any challenge exam if there is a CLEP. DISCUSSION: “What’s happening on campus for transfer?” DISCUSSION: Vasseur College Summer Program which grew into the program at Colby College. This program is completely free to any student that attends. It is open to community college students and offers two free classes and a chance to redefine them as purely being a student. Six students were accepted. One dropped out this weed so there is an opening in the program which starts June 18th. The students need to be able to succeed, have a good track record and be currently enrolled or recently graduated. The program is 20 years old and has only lost about five students over the years. Retention is over 95% to complete a four year degree. Currently WCCC, EMCC, KVCC students are attending DISCUSSION The University is looking at concepts of “One stop shopping” and centralized transfer and application processing. USM has a handful of transfer scholarships for some students. However a lot of schools don’t have any special scholarships for transfer students. NEXT MEETING: Friday, December 2 at EMCC. The following meeting will be held in June 2006 in Presque Isle..
