Transfer FAQs

What is the difference between an Associate Degree, Bachelors Degree, and Masters Degree?
Associate Degree: typically 60 college credits or more. KVCC only offers Associate Degrees. They are often called “two year degrees” but are ONLY 2 year degrees if a person is full time each semester (15 credits / semester) and takes the right classes to complete all the requirements. KVCC’s Liberal Studies Associate degree is designed to transfer to a Bachelors Degree and to fulfill the General Education requirements at the University.

Bachelor Degree: typically a 120+ college credit degree. These are offered at universities and other “4 year colleges” across the country. Again, a person would have to be a full time student each semester and very focused to earn a bachelors degree in 4 years.

Master’s degree: typically earned after completion of a Bachelors degree.
Not to confuse the issue, but there are some colleges like Husson College and Thomas College who now offer degrees that are 5 years in length and include both the Bachelors and Masters degree in one college acceptance.

What is the difference between Teresa Smith, Trio Transfer Counselor and Jim Peacock, Transfer Counselor at KVCC?
Both Teresa and Jim can assist you in the Transfer process. The difference is that Teresa serves Trio students and provides more intensive support to a student in the transfer process. Trio is a federal program that many KVCC students are eligible for by meeting one of the following areas: income level; first generation college student; or disability. Contact Teresa Smith for details.

Do I need to take two semesters of a foreign language at KVCC in the Liberal Studies degree in order to be accepted in a bachelors degree?
It depends. If you had two years of a foreign language in high school, you should be fine.

If you did not have two years of a foreign language in high school and are applying to a Bachelors of Arts degree at the university, you probably will need to fulfill that requirement.

Bachelors of Science degree at the University level “may” not require a foreign language.

The key here is to contact the University you are thinking about applying to and ask this question of their Admissions Office.

When should I apply to transfer to a university or another college?
When you are ready to transfer, you should apply at least one semester ahead of time.

Example: if you want to enter U.S.M. in the fall semester, you should apply sometime in November or December or January at the latest.

If you want to begin at U. Maine in January, you should apply in May of the previous year or during the summer at the latest.

When I transfer to another college, will my financial aid package go with me?
Is there anything specific that I need to do?
No, your financial aid does not go with you. The financial aid that a student receives is specific to the institution that they are actively attending. When a student transfers and will require financial aid at their new school the student must apply for aid at the new school. (Simply add the new school code to your existing FAFSA information and talk to the Financial Aid personnel at the college you are transferring to).

What is important when transferring is to inform any lenders that you are transferring so that the "student deferment" status continues and the repayment date remains open. In order to assure that the transferring student does not lose this benefit, they must provide an "In-School Deferment Request" to their lender(s). This printable form is available on-line at http://www.studentloans.com/resources.cfm.  Click on “In-School Deferment Form”. The student fills out Section 1. The Registrar's Office at the new school certifies the student's status at their school. (See Section 4.) The completed form is mailed to the lender. I suggest that the student keep a copy for their files.
