Phi Theta Kappa is the international honor society for community colleges. Founded in 1918 to give prestigious recognition to community college students with excellent scholarship and character, Phi Theta Kappa has always maintained fidelity to its founders' commitment to provide enrichment in four hallmarks: scholarship, leadership, service and fellowship.

Phi Theta Kappa: An Invitation That's
"As Good As Gold"

Driven by these ideas, the Society has grown from a handful of chapters in Missouri to more than 1,100 chapters in all 50 states. Cumulative membership exceeds 1,200,00 with some 80,000 members being abroad.

Today, Phi Theta Kappa features some of the nation's finest educational programs for community college students. These programs form the cornerstone of many community college successes in nurturing intellectual curiosity, good citizenship and leadership potential.

Phi Theta Kappa programs include awards programs, an annual service program, scholarship development activities, alumni programs, publications, a major leadership development program supported by the Kellogg Foundation and the multi-faceted honors program.

The mission of Phi Theta Kappa shall be to recognize and encourage scholarship among two-year college students. To achieve this purpose, Phi Theta Kappa shall provide opportunity for the development of leadership and service, for an intellectual climate for exchange of ideas and ideals, for lively fellowship of scholars, and for stimulation of interest in continuing academic excellence.

KVCC has a very active chapter of Phi Theta Kappa that provides students with the opportunity to develop their leadership and organizational skills outside the classroom. The chapter is involved with a wide variety of activities that benefit the Kennebec County community and the KVCC college community. Many students join not only to participate in service work and leadership opportunity, but also for the lively fellowship and stimulation of interest in continuing academic excellence. Chapter members are inducted semi-annually; they eligible for transfer scholarships to four-year colleges and universities.
