DESCRIPTION


This Associate in Applied Science degree prepares students for entry-level positions in the medical office and health care environment. The combination of general education and medical office coursework provide the student with a foundation to begin a career in the medical office. The medical office coursework emphasizes the importance of patient confidentiality, legal issues related to patient care, and HIPAA. Students gain entry level skills in record keeping, scheduling appointments and referrals, coding and processing claims. Students will have the opportunity to learn about the various insurances used in health care.


PROGRAM MISSION


The mission of the Medical Office Management program is to prepare students for employment medical offices, clinics and other health related settings. The curriculum provides the student with entry-level skills in the medical administrative area as well as transferable skills necessary in today’s workforce. The program provides a foundation for acquisition of additional skills in health care administration or other non-clinical health care careers.

 

EDUCATIONAL OUTCOMES


Upon successful completion of the Medical Office Management program the graduates are expected to:


1) Perform competently in the work environment.
2) Demonstrate professional behaviors that allow them to function ethically and responsibly by showing tolerance and respect for diversity of culture, age and gender.
3) Demonstrate effective communication skills with patients, families, and other members of the health care community.
4) Be capable of critical thinking and problem solving within their scope of work.
5) Participate in activities that foster professional growth and life-long learning.

ADDITIONAL PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS

 

Students must assume responsibility for transportation and/or living costs to and from statewide experiential sites. Students may be required to provide proof of additional immunizations depending upon the experiential site. Prior to the experiential course, students must successfully complete Basic Life Support certification (CPR for the Healthcare Provider from the American Heart Association or Professional Rescuer from the American Red Cross).

 

CRITERIA FOR GRADUATION

 

Students must complete 62 credits in the Medical Office Management program and achieve a "C" in all courses. Students must maintain a final GPA of 2.0.
