DESCRIPTION

Designed with input from the regional business community to prepare students for baccalaureate computer programs and employment opportunities, the Computer Science program provides students with basic and advanced IT (Information Technology) skills.  Graduates are prepared for continuing IT career education and/or entry level positions in what is projected to be one of the fastest growing occupations in Maine and the nation.

PROGRAM MISSION

The Computer Science Program at Kennebec Valley Community College consists of two possible programs of study: Associate in Science-Computer Science and the Computer Science Certificate Program. Both areas of study promote self-motivation and discipline.
Through classroom lectures, laboratory experiences, and internships the students are prepared to accelerate in their field of study whether they are transferring to a four-year program at another institute, or entering the workforce.  This is reflected in all of the courses required to complete the degree whether they are general education courses or relate directly to their major.

EDUCATIONAL OUTCOMES

Upon successful completion of the Computer Science program, the graduate is expected to:

  1. Be a person who utilizes resources and technology to find information both personally and professionally in computer-related fields
  2. Be a competent professional who displays the computer skills and interpersonal skills necessary to speak and write clearly, effectively and persuasively.
  3. Be a critical thinker who uses technology to analyze and solve problems in the computer field.
  4. Be a self-starter who uses theory, facts and principles learned in the classroom and through internships to accomplish a given goal without direction.

CRITERIA FOR GRADUATION

Students must complete 60-63 credits in the Computer Science program and achieve a minimum grade of "C" in all core courses (*). Students must attain a final GPA of 2.0 or higher.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

Graduates of the Computer Science program are likely to find employment opportunities as computer support technicians in a variety of companies and organizations, with demand for these skills continuing and growing well into the foreseeable future.
