Applied Electronics & Computer Technology

~ Associate in Science Degree, Associate in Applied Science Degree, Certificate ~

DESCRIPTION

The Applied Electronics and Computer Technology (AECT) program at Kennebec Valley Community College prepares men and women with the technical background and practical skills necessary for careers in the installation, maintenance, support, and troubleshooting of electronics, telecommunications, and computer technology based systems and equipment. The AECT program also offers graduates the opportunity for transfer into an Electrical/Computer Engineering Technology baccalaureate program offered at other colleges and universities.

The AECT program offers an Associate in Applied Science Degree, Associate in Science Degree, Marine Electronics Certificate, and a Computer Technology Certificate.

Advanced technical knowledge coupled with effective communication skills are essential for success in today’s technology-driven job market. Therefore, the AECT program requires each student to exercise critical thinking skills and problem solving techniques. The program also encourages each student to further develop both their written and verbal communication skills.

The Associate in Science path is designed for students who may wish to continue their education towards a B.S. in Electrical/Computer Engineering Technology. The Computer Technology Certificate Option provides alternative tracks for those students who do not wish to pursue an Associate Degree.

The AECT program has established 2+2 articulation agreements with the University of Maine in the following degree programs:

  • B.S. Electrical Engineering Technology, University of Maine at Orono
  • B.S. Computer Information Systems, University of Maine at Augusta

PROGRAM MISSION

Recognizing the need for lifelong learning, the Applied Electronics and Computer Technology program assists students at various stages of life to achieve their personal and professional goals.

The AECT program strives to maintain high academic standards for teaching and learning through a continuous process of self-evaluation. Students are exposed to a learning environment which is safe and supportive of student growth and achievement.

The AECT program emphasizes hands-on learning using the latest training equipment, innovative teaching techniques, web-supported course delivery and highly trained faculty members, with a primary goal of preparing students for successful entry into a technology driven work force.

The AECT program prepares graduates for transfer into an Electrical/Computer Engineering Technology baccalaureate program offered at other colleges and universities.

EDUCATIONAL OUTCOMES

Upon successful completion of the AECT program, each graduate will be expected to:

  1. Practice the technical skills of the electronics, telecommunications, and computer profession in a conscientious, responsible, and accountable manner, while recognizing the need of continuing education to expand upon their technical knowledge and skills.
  2. Communicate effectively and possess the interpersonal skills necessary for success in an information-based society.3) Utilize critical thinking skills and problem solving techniques to provide solutions for today’s electronics, telecommunications, and computer technology challenges.
  3. Utilize critical thinking skills and problem solving techniques to provide solutions for today's electronics, telecommunications, and computer technology challenges.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Each student will be encouraged to take the following nationally recognized professional certification exams during their senior year. These certifications will aid the graduate in gaining employment in the related field.

  1. A+ Computer Certification - The A+ Certification is a CompTIA-sponsored testing program designed to certify the competency of the Computer Service Technician. This credential validates that the holder has reached a level of competency commonly accepted and valued by the computer industry.
  2. Apple Certified Macintosh Technician Certification (ACMT) - The Apple Certified Macintosh Technician Certification verifies the ability to perform basic troubleshooting and repair of both desktop and portable Macintosh systems, such as the iMac and MacBook Pro. ACMT certification exams emphasize identifying and resolving common Mac OSX problems, and using Apple Service and Support products and practices to effectively repair Apple hardware.
  3. Network+ Certification - The Network+ is a CompTIA-sponsored testing program designed to certify the competency of the Computer Network Technician. This credential validates that the holder has reached a level of competency commonly accepted and valued by the computer networking industry.
  4. Certified Electronics Technician (CET) - Delivered through The International Society of Certified Electronics Technicians (ISCET), this exam is designed to measure the degree of theoretical knowledge and technical proficiency of the electronics technician. If passed, this certification will enable the student to be recognized as an Associate Level Certified Electronics Technician.
