Diagnostic Information

The HOBET provides an objective measurement of your critical reading ability and compares your ability against the level of mastery required for success in college.  Secondly, the HOBET evaluates your level of success with basic mathematics, the math necessary for you to function, not only in your academic courses, but also in your clinical practice following college.  Thirdly, the HOBET determines your effective speed in reading college level material.  Lastly, the HOBET identifies how you approach study, in general, and identifies which learning approach is most effective for you.

The HOBET strives to academically support you by providing diagnostic information about your basic, academic, processing skills.

The HOBET will not only identify your weaknesses in those processing skills which are necessary for success in college, but the test will enable you to correct your weaknesses prior to entering school.  The diagnostic report generated by the HOBET can alert both tutors and the college learning centers to your special needs, so that assistance can be given before you experience problems that may tarnish your academic record.

Remember!  The HOBET is not designed to keep you out of school.  It is designed to help you identify which of your academic processing skills must be sharpened before you begin this advanced education.

Sample Reading Comprehension Question

Directions:  Read the following paragraphs and answer the questions that accompany the paragraphs.  Circle the letter of the answer which you believe most accurately satisfies the requirements of each question.  At the end of this reading test is the answer key.

A

Grass, the most stepped-on organism on earth, creates more energy than an atomic bomb--just 700 acres of grass gathers from sunlight in one day as much energy as that of the standard atomic bomb or 20,000 tons of TNT.  Grass is more valuable than gold and as vital to us as air and sunshine.  As a tool against floods, grass is 10,000 times more effective than all the dams built by man.

Based on paragraph A, which statement is true?

A.  Grass is more vital to us than air or sunshine
B.  Only an atomic bomb creates more energy than grass
C.  A standard atomic bomb is equal to 20,000 tons of TNT
D.  Electric power dams are more powerful than grass against flooding

Rationale:  (Correct response highlighted in BOLD.)

A is a poor choice.  It states that grass is as vital to us as air and sunshine, not "more than."
B is a weak answer because the paragraph states "grass...creates more energy than an atomic bomb."
C is the best answer because the paragraph states "...as much energy as a standard atomic bomb or 20,000 tons of TNT."
D declares just the opposite, that dams are not as powerful as grass in restraining floods.
