PSY101 Introduction to
Psychology
3 Credits
This course is an introduction and overview of the study of human behaviors.
Lectures and discussion topics will include motivation, perception,
learning, personality, historical roots, biological bases of behavior,
scientific method, human development, psychopathology, and theory.
PSY202 Community Psychology
3 Credits
This course is designed to focus on social issues, social institutions, and
other settings that influence groups and organizations and the individuals
in them. Community psychology is about understanding people in their social
worlds and using this understanding to improve people’s well-being. This
course will be a bridge between the psychological and the social, the
private, and the public.
Prerequisite: PSY101 or permission of the instructor.
PSY204 Abnormal Psychology
3 Credits
This course examines behavior identified as different from societal norms.
Lectures and discussion topics will include psychopathology, assessment,
diagnoses, the impact of physical health, review of the research, and the
impact on our society.
Prerequisite: PSY101.
PSY205 Dreams/Transpersonal Psychology
3 Credits
This course is an introduction and overview of the study of dream
interpretation and its significance historically and currently. Lectures and
discussion topics will include the leading theorists in the field, the use
of dreams in different cultures, using symbolic language and metaphor, the
physiology of sleep, and dreaming and personal development using dream
interpretation.
Pre/Co-requisite: PSY101.
PSY206 The Psychology of Film & Literature
3 Credits
This course seeks to give practical application to many of the concepts that
are presented in PSY101, Introduction to Psychology. Students will examine
how psychological concepts are presented in film and literature. Treatment
of the mentally ill, ethical behavior, accurate portrayal of mental
disorders, and other topics will be closely evaluated and discussed.
Pre/Co-requisite: PSY101.
PSY208 Advanced Topics in Psychology
3 Credits
These courses offer an in-depth exploration of specific issues and topics
within the various subspecialties of psychology. These courses are intended
for students who wish to pursue their studies in a particular field beyond
the basic course offered in areas such as clinical, cognitive,
developmental, and social psychology. Problems of academic and social
significance are chosen for study. Topics will be changed each semester.
Prerequisite: PSY 101 or permission of the instructor.
PSY215 Developmental Psychology
3 Credits
This course is a survey of the biological, cognitive and socioemotional
aspects of human growth and development across the lifespan. Lifespan topics
include an introduction to the lifespan perspective; biological changes;
family, peer and social relations; cognition; and personality development.
Prerequisite: PSY101 or permission of instructor.
PSY220 Behavior Management
3 Credits
Students learn to apply behavior management techniques in their own lives
and in the educational setting. Control of the anecdotes & consequences of
behaviors is emphasized. Study of theory & research provides a framework for
practical application.
Prerequisite: PSY101 or permission of instructor.
