Medical Assisting Course Descriptions

MAS114 Medical Office Law and Ethics 3 Credits
This course is designed to provide the student with the essential foundations of law and ethics within a medical office setting. They will be introduced to professional and career responsibilities, courts, contracts and defenses, professional liability, and medical malpractice, Privacy law and HIPAA, and workplace legalities.
   
MAS115 Clinical Procedures 3 Credits
This course is the first of a two-part sequence dealing with the role of the medical assistant in health care. Student learning is focused on the ethical issues of patient care and an introduction to the MA's role in obtaining patient histories, maintaining medical asepsis, assisting in physical exams for all of the medical specialties and in office surgery, collecting laboratory specimens, and performing vital signs. In addition, the student will develop an understanding of pathophysiology and prepare and implement appropriate patient educational tools.
Prerequisites: BIO213, MAS121;
Co-requisites: BIO214, MAS117 or permission of instructor.
   
MAS116 Introduction to Professional Administrative Management 3 Credits
This course is designed to provide the student with the essential skills for professional personal attributes and administrative management of a medical office. They will be introduced to professional and career responsibilities, cultural diversity, stress management, communication techniques, records management, administrative responsibilities, and daily financial, billing, accounting, and collection practices. Students will have to demonstrate competency in telephone triage on an entry level basis as well as develop a procedure manual.
   
MAS117 Clinical Lab 1 Credit
This course is the laboratory component for Clinical Procedures I. Students will perform clinical procedures introducing them to the medical assistant's role in the physician's office and laboratory.
Prerequisites: BIO213, MAS121;
Co-requisites: BIO214, MAS115.
   
MAS121 Medical Terminology 3 Credits
The student will develop a basic understanding of the medical language employed in the health care professions utilizing word analysis and application of medical terms to anatomy, physiology, and pathophysiology of the human body.
   
MAS211 Insurance Coding for the Medical Office 3 Credits
In this course students will develop a basic understanding of procedural and diagnostic coding using CPT and ICD-9 CM. The focus will be on data analysis for billing and reimbursement.
Prerequisites: BIO214, MAS114, MAS116, MAS121;
Co-requisite: BIO216 or permission of instructor.
   
MAS212 Introduction to Health Insurance and Claims Processing 3 Credits
Utilizing computer applications, this course will cover the flow of information in a medical office. Students will develop skills to initiate and input patient data using a computerized medical office program. This will include scheduling appointments, recording patient information, filing insurance claims and managing accounts receivable. In addition, students will be able to process insurance claim forms adhering to legal restrictions. Topics will include requirements for managed care systems, Blue Cross/Blue Shield, Medicaid, Medicare, Tricare, Chamva, Workers Compensation, Disability, and third-party insurance.
Prerequisites: BIO214, MAS121, MAS211, or permission of instructor.
   
MAS215 Advanced Clinical Theory 3 Credits
This course explores the principles and methodologies for providing patient care in the medical office. A special focus upon pharmacology including drug classification, effects of medications on body systems, mathematics and dosage calculations, and the correct administration of parenteral, oral, topical, rectal, otic, and nasal medications, and the performance of laboratory procedures in the physician's medical office.
Prerequisites: BIO214, MAS114, MAS115, MAS116, MAS117, MAS121;
Co-requisites: BIO216, MAS217 or permission of instructor.
   
MAS217 Advanced Clinical Lab 2 Credits
This course is a competency-based laboratory experience. The student will be provided with practice in clinical skills performed by medical assistants.
Prerequisites: BIO214, MAS114, MAS115, MAS116, MAS117, MAS121;
Co-requisites: BIO216, MAS215 or permission of instructor.
   
MAS234 Clinical/Administrative Office Practicum 5 Credits
This course allows the student to gain practical experience in providing clinical care to patients and performing administrative tasks that occur in a medical practice. Students will be placed in a primary site, a physician's office or rural health clinic for the bulk of their training. In addition, they will participate in two rotations where they will gain in-depth experience in hospital-based phlebotomy and patient assessment and education.
Prerequisite: Successfully complete all course work in the first three semesters;
Co-requisite: All course work listed in the final semester of program.
