ENG101 College Composition
3 Credits
College Composition is a basic course that emphasizes the writing process to
strengthen the student's ability to think logically and to write clearly.
Various writing skills will be practiced and applied through numerous
writing assignments. In addition, students will be required to do research
and write a research paper.
Students will work in a computerized writing lab; therefore, keyboarding
skills are required.
ENG108 Technical Writing
3 Credits
This course emphasizes principles of clear written communication for
informational, analytical, and persuasive purposes. The course stresses both
the writing process and the writing situation consisting of subject,
audience, and purpose. By learning to assess communication needs, students
develop problem-solving and critical thinking skills and then use these
skills to guide the writing process in a variety of communication forms.
Students learn to gather and select information and to choose organizing and
formatting strategies that result in clear written documents.
Class activities include writing in a computerized writing lab;
therefore, keyboarding skills are required.
Prerequisite: CPT117 or
equivalent or demonstrated keyboarding skills.
ENG121 Introduction to Literature (H)
3 Credits
This humanities course will provide students with the opportunity for
personal growth and an insight into social problems as revealed through
literature. Students will read and discuss a selection of short stories,
plays, poems and novels.
ENG210 Creative Writing (H)
3 Credits
A workshop course for those who wish to express themselves imaginatively in
poetry, fiction, or drama. This course covers research for writing,
cultivation of good writing habits, revising and editing, as well as
discussion of strategies for publication.
Prerequisite: ENG101.
ENG212 Poetry: An Introduction to the Language of Thought and Feeling (H)
3 Credits
Rich in sensation and sense, poetry may be the most expressive of literary
genres. In its many forms – from lyric, to ballad, from rhyming and rhythmic
to free verse – poetry touches a diversity of individual, social, and
cultural worlds. It gives voice to the emotions and ideas that shape human
experience. This course helps students to understand and respond to poetic
expression. Students will discover poetry, not as a mystery of hidden
artistic expression, but as an understandable and enriching art form.
Pre/Co-requisite: ENG101 or ENG108.
ENG219 Professional Writing
3 Credits
Professional Writing examines and applies the principles, methods and forms
needed to produce clear and effective business correspondence, resumes, job
application letters and formal reports. This course builds upon writing and
grammar skills while also emphasizing the responsibility of the writer to
thoroughly understand the information being communicated, to organize that
information effectively, and to present the information in a format, tone,
and style appropriate to the specific audience. Collaborative work is
included as an essential skill in professional communication. Students have
access to a computerized writing lab, so previous word processing experience
is required.
Prerequisites: ENG101, ENG108 or ENG103; and AOT100, AOT101, or CPT117 or
permission of instructor.
ENG220 American Literature (H)
3 Credits
A survey of American writers from Colonial times to the present will be
read, studied and discussed. This course will provide students with the
opportunity to examine the personal, historical, cultural and social
contexts reflected in American Literature.
Prerequisite: ENG101 or ENG121.
ENG223 World Literature (H)
3 Credits
Selections of literary works from Europe, Asia, Africa, South America, and
North America will be read, discussed and analyzed.
Prerequisite: ENG101 or
ENG121.
ENG230 20th Century German Literature (H)
3 Credits
Students will read and discuss a selection of 20th Century German literature
in translation, including poetry, short stories, and novels. German culture
as well as historical events greatly influenced German literature during
this tumultuous period. In addition, students will be exposed to the
cultural diversity of German language and literature. Discussion will be
augmented by films as well as guest speakers.
