AOT100 Personal Keyboarding                                                                        1 Credit

This is an introductory course in computer keyboarding. It should enable students to develop the skill and technique to efficiently and effectively enter data via computer. Students must meet the speed requirement of 25 wpm in order to successfully complete this course.

AOT101 Keyboard Skillbuilding and Document Formatting  I                     3 Credits

This basic course in keyboarding is designed to enable students to develop proper keyboarding techniques, accuracy development techniques, and speed development techniques, along with strategies for increasing level of competency in keyboarding and proofreading. Students are introduced to keyboarding on the computer. Although this is not a word processing course, this course is designed to enable students to develop basic skill in formatting and editing business letters, memorandums, and typical business reports. Students must meet the speed requirement of 35 wpm on a three-minute timing with a 3-error rating in order to successfully complete this course.

AOT102 Keyboard Skillbuilding and Document Formatting II                     3 Credits

This intermediate keyboarding course is for students who have successfully completed basic keyboarding. It is designed to promote the further development of basic keyboarding skills through a systematic/diagnostic program that is synergistic, individualized and goal-oriented, and pretest-practice-posttest based. Although this is not a word processing course, this course is designed to enable students to develop increased skill in formatting and editing business letters, memorandums, and typical business reports. Students must meet the speed requirement of 45 wpm on a five-minute timing with a 5-error rating in order to successfully complete this course. Prerequisite: AOT101.                       Exception: Medical Transcription Certificate Program.

AOT116 Technical Office Applications                                                          3 Credits

This course is designed to help students develop decision-making skills for success in today’s office with particular emphasis on essential communications skills, files management, and administrative support responsibilities and procedures. Prerequisite: AOT101.

AOT200 Cortez Peters Skillbuilding                                                                 1 Credit

This advanced skillbuilding course is for students who have successfully completed basic and intermediate keyboarding. It is designed to enable students to develop increased skills in keyboarding competency using three major components: diagnosis of current skills and needs, individualized practice with prescribed materials, and evaluation of progress. In order to successfully complete this course, students must key 50 gross wpm on two different 5-minute timings with a 5-error rating.

AOT217 Professional Communications and Presentations                            3 Credits

This course is designed to address all aspects of the total office application environment. It will involve an introduction to web-page design, message creation and retrieval, and multi-media presentations. It will develop relationships between word processing, spreadsheet, and database programs. Skills to be developed include the integration of various office applications. Prerequisites: AOT101, CPT117.

AOT223 Information Processing I                                                                   3 Credits

The focus of this course will be on basic and intermediate level word processing applications.  Current word processing software will be used.  Proofreading will also be stressed. This course will provide training to prepare students to take the Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS/specialist skills) certification exam upon completion of this course. Prerequisite:  AOT102 or AOT200.  Recommended:  CPT117.

AOT224 Information Processing II                                                                  3 Credits

Advanced functions of word processing will be covered. Topics such as merging, versioning, tracking changes, creating forms and macros, working with master documents, indexes, table of contents, and XMLschemas.  Proofreading will be stressed.  This course will provide training to prepare students to take the Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS/expert skills) certification exam upon completion of this course.  Prerequisite:  AOT223.

AOT225 Database Applications                                                                       3 Credits

This course is designed to use current database software to solve basic and advanced database functions.  Topics include creating tables, forms, reports, queries, and filters as well as automating, securing, and integrating databases.  Proofreading will be stressed.  This course will provide training to prepare students to take the Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS/specialist skills) certification exam upon completion of this course. Prerequisite: CPT117, AOT101.

AOT226 Spreadsheet Applications                                                                  3 Credits

This course is designed to use current spreadsheet software to solve business-related problems.  This course provides the student with an in-depth understanding of worksheet design, charting, what-if-analysis, Web queries, adding hyperlinks, and working with large worksheets. Proofreading will be stressed.  This course will provide training to prepare students to take the Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS/specialist and skills) certification exam upon completion of this course.  Prerequisite: CPT117, AOT101.

AOT227 Desktop Publishing                                                                           3 Credits

This course provides students with an opportunity to learn how to use desktop publishing to output text with near-typeset quality for use in such documents as newsletters, brochures, annual reports, invoices, and letterhead. The course provides "hands-on" experience utilizing computers and a laser printers, and scanners. Emphasis will be placed on professional-looking design and layout. Proofreading will be stressed.  Pre/Corequisite: AOT223.

AOT228 Medical Transcription I                                                                    3 Credits

This course is designed to teach medical transcription utilizing medical terms as they appear in medical reports and relate them to the pathologies being treated. Students will be practicing transcription of medical reports and correspondence by using up-to-date transcribing equipment and computers. Pre/Corequisites:  BIO113, MAS121.

AOT229 Medical Transcription II                                                                  3 Credits

This course is designed to build on the foundation laid in the beginning medical transcription course bridging the gap between the typically easy-to-understand dictation and the difficult, often indistinct dictation heard in the work environment of a medical transcriptionist.  A discussion of current issues in the field will be included.  Prerequisite:  AOT228

AOT230 Administrative Machine Transcription                                            3 Credits

This course is designed to help students achieve the ability to transcribe business documents correctly and efficiently using word processing software.  The use of transcribing equipment as well as business terminology and English grammar will be emphasized. Prerequisites:  AOT116, AOT223.

 AOT232 Legal Terminology & Machine Transcription                                3 Credits

This course is designed to help students achieve the ability to transcribe legal documents correctly and efficiently using word processing software.  The use of transcribing equipment as well as legal terminology and English grammar will be emphasized. Prerequisites: AOT116, BUS116, AOT223.

 AOT234 Experiential Education                                                                     3 Credits

Students will be required to participate in an experiential education course (on-the-job training) during their final semester in the degree or certificate program. Students will be required to develop measurable learning objectives, keep a daily office manual/journal, and submit a report upon the completion of the course. In order to qualify for an experiential education course, students must have completed all core courses as applied to major with a minimum grade of “C” and must qualify for final semester. Prerequisite: Completion of all core courses as applied to major with a minimum grade of “C” and must qualify for final semester.
