DESCRIPTION:
This course covers basic papermaking
technology. Topics include preparation of stock for papermaking, additives to
papermaking stock, wet-end and dry-end paper machine operations, paper surface
treatments, manufacturing of specific paper and board grades, and paper
testing. Papermaking processes are discussed in the contexts of basic chemical
and mechanical principles, including steam properties and paper machine wet-end
chemistry.
COURSE
OBJECTIVES:
Upon successful completion of this
course, the student should be able to:
1. describe the
basic papermaking unit operations.
2. correlate
underlying scientific principles to related papermaking processes.
3. identify
common problems occurring in papermaking.
4. identify
appropriate remedial measures to common problems.

COURSE
ACTIVITIES:
While this is primarily a lecture and
discussion course, TAPPI Introduction to Pulp and Paper Technology
videotapes will be used extensively to augment the instruction. The Instructor
may wish to arrange field trips to the pulp and paper mill area at any given
mill site in lieu of or in addition to these tapes.
COURSE
REQUIREMENTS:
Grading:
Tests (2).......................................................................................................................... 50%
Mid-Term Exam.............................................................................................................. 25%
Final Exam....................................................................................................................... 25%
Equipment:
Hard hat, safety shoes, safety glasses,
hearing protection, and respirator will be required for mill field trips (generally
provided by the host mill).
