COURSE DESCRIPTION:

 

This course serves as an introduction to the study of pulp and paper technology. It will focus on providing the student with an overview of the entire pulp and paper manufacturing process—from the tree to the shipping dock. The course defines and discusses the properties of wood and wood fibers, wood and chip handling, the various pulping methods utilized (including cooking equipment, processing of pulps, and chemical recover), paper machine stock preparation, paper manufacture, properties and testing of pulp and paper, process control, and pulp and paper industry environmental considerations. A special section on process control and quality assurance is included.

Upon successful completion of this course, the student should be able to:

 

1.         define terminology applicable to pulp and paper manufacture.

2.         describe the basic pulp and papermaking processes.

3.         identify requirements for process control and quality assurance in pulp and paper manufacturing processes.

COURSE ACTIVITIES:

 

This is primarily a lecture and discussion course, although several appropriate TAPPI Introduction to Pulp and Paper Technology videotapes will be used. The instructor may wish to arrange field trips to the pulp and paper mill areas if available at any given mill site.

Equipment:

 

Hard hat, safety shoes, safety glasses, hearing protection, and respirator will be required for mill field trips.

 

Make-up Exam Policy:

 

All exams must be taken. The student is responsible for making arrangements for make-up should he/she be absent. Tests not made up will receive a score of zero.

 

ATTENDANCE POLICY:

 

More than three absences during the course will require special authorization by the instructor.
