What is Health Information?                                                           
    Health Information is an Allied Health program that evaluates the documentation created during the healthcare encounter. This evaluation is for quality, statistics, conversion of written words to data for databases and reimbursement. Course work also focuses on cancer registries, pharmaceutical, medicolegal and case management.
 
What is the Health Information Technology field?                 
    The Health Information Technology field combines the expanding arena of health care with the cutting edge of technology. As a Health Information Management professional, you are the expert on patient data that physicians, nurses, and other allied health providers rely on to perform their jobs.

Do high school students have the option of taking college courses at KVCC?

    Yes! KVCC offers the Tuition and Reduction Program for qualified high school students.
Under the program guidelines students must meet the following standards:
     • Be a high school junior or senior
     • Have a minimum grade point average of at least a B
     • Obtain permission from a parent and guidance counselor
     • Have the necessary prerequisites and co-requisites for the desired courses
     • Satisfy all other reasonable requirements imposed by the college

What are the Education outcomes of the Health Information Technology program?

    Upon successful completion of the Health Information Technology program, a graduate is expected to:
   1) Comply with the professional code of ethics of AHIMA and maintain

        effective professional conduct at all times.
   2) Be prepared for certification for the RHIT credential.
   3) Demonstrate the entry level skills as outlined in the Domains, Subdomains,

       and Tasks of AHIMA.
   4) Demonstrate clear and effective communication skills, critical thinking, and

       problem solving within their scope of practice.

 
What is the criteria for graduating from the Health Information Technology Program?
    Students must complete 68 credits in the Health Information Technology program and achieve a minimum grade of "C" in all courses. Students must attain a final GPA of 2.0 or higher.  Graduates are eligible to sit for the Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) credentialing examination administered by the American Health Information Management Association.
 
Are there any related certificate courses that would be included in the Health Information Technology program?
    Yes, there is the Medical Coding Certificate, a one year program.

What are some of the different types of credentialing opportunities that are available to the Health Information Management professional?
 

Certification -

To ensure that its members meet professional standards of excellence, AHIMA issues credentials in health information management, coding, and healthcare privacy and security. Members earn credentials through a combination of education and experience, and finally performance on national certification exams. Following their initial certification, AHIMA members must maintain their credentials and thereby the highest level of competency for their employers and consumers through rigorous continuing education requirements.

Health Information Management -

•  Registered Health Information Administrators (RHIA) are skilled in the collection, interpretation,

    analysis of patient data. A Bachelor's Degree is required.
•  Registered Health Information Technicians (RHIT) ensure the quality of medical records by

   verifying their completeness, accuracy, and proper entry into computer systems. They may also

   use computer applications to assemble and analyze patient data for the purpose of improving

   patient care or controlling costs. RHITs often specialize in coding diagnoses and procedures in

   patient records for reimbursement and research. An Associate's Degree  is required.
•  Certified Tumor Registrar (CTR) Cancer registry technicians are responsible for cancer data

   collection that are used for quality management and improvement, cancer conferences,

   administrative reports, and marketing. This individual usually reports to the hospital

   administration, quality assurance, or to the Health Information managers.

Coding -

•  Certified Coding Associate (CCA). The CCA should be viewed as the starting point for an

    individual entering a new career as a coder.
•  Certified Coding Specialist (CCS). The CCS certification exam assesses mastery or proficiency

   in coding rather than the entry-level skills.
•  Certified Coding Specialist-Physician-based (CCS-P).  If you perform coding in a doctors’s

   office, clinic, or similar setting , you should consider obtaining the CCS-P certification to attest

   your ability.

Healthcare Privacy and Security -

• Certified in Healthcare Privacy and Security (CHPS) - Demonstrates privacy and

   confidentiality in healthcare by issuing a credential that demonstrates mastery in both areas.

What are the various types of potential positions available for the RHIT professional?

•  Medical Coder- Individual who uses the grouping of medical diagnoses within an established

   category and with standard symbols found in the ( ICD-9-CM) International Classification of

   Diseases to bill for services to patients.
•  Coding Manager- This person oversees the coding activities in a medical facility.
•  Performance Improvement Director- This person is an Administration Director overseeing, and

   supervising the Quality / Performance Department that improves patient care, patient safety,

   resource utilization, and ancillary services.

•  HIM Director - This person oversees a Health Information Department ensuring the accuracy,

  completeness, coding, security, storage and retrieval of health care related data in medical

   records.  This person will possess the (RHIA) Registered Health Information Administer

   credential.

 
What are the types of continuing education programs available?
AHIMA is a key resource in providing professional information.
 
What are the Continuing Education (CE) requirements for maintaining your certification and how do you obtain them?
RHITs- must complete 20 hours of CE credits per two years.
RHIAs- must complete 30 hours of CE credits per two years.

CCS or CCS-Ps- must complete a formal self assessment process annually to maintain credential status.
 

Here are a few ways you can obtain CE credits:

  • Attend any sponsored event through AHIMA (seminars, etc).


  • Journal of AHIMA quizzes.

  • Employer sponsored training.

  • Be a guest speaker in any HIM education forum.

Veteran's Benefits:
   All credit programs and some non-credit course are approved by the Maine State Approving Agency for Veterans Education Programs for the use of the various VA educational assistance programs, more commonly known as  "GI Bills".  All credit programs offer by Kennebec Valley Community College are approved by the Department of Veteran Affairs as eligible for VA benefit payments. Qualified military personnel, veterans, and their eligible dependents who are enrolled in approved programs may apply for VA benefits through the Financial Aid Office. Students should obtain VA applications from their Veteran Centers or the Kennebec Valley Community College Financial Aid Office as far in advance of course registration as possible. Requests for Advance Pay of VA benefits must be submitted to the Financial Aid Office 30 days before the start date of the first semester of enrollment. The Financial Aid Office will assist students with the VA application process, payment problems, and other issues that may arise during enrollment. Students who receive VA benefits may also qualify for other financial aid programs offered by Kennebec Valley Community College and are encouraged to apply.
