Service Opportunity (October 6, 2005)

Cheryl Mara of China, Maine has contacted us about the following service opportunities:

I am vice president of China's PTA-type organization called FOCES (Friends of China Elementary Schools).  We do all of the fundraising for field trips and enrichment programming for 600 students.  Our 26th annual craft fair is on November 12th and MANY volunteers are always needed.  The fair is from 9:30 to 3:00 pm at the China Middle School on route 202 in China.  Let me know if anyone is interested in volunteering for that and I can give them specifics of what is needed.  We have a bake table, run a full luncheon and the "children's area" could probably use a few nice young people to paint faces and play games with children.  Clean up is easy, but many hands make light work, so extra people are always nice for that!

Our church is hosting a Halloween Open House on October 31st and will be serving hot cocoa, hot cider and light refreshments to the over 100 hundred children who trick-or-treat in quaint China Village each year.  We will have games for children to play for prizes and a few extra hands would be nice for that.

Our town has a large committee of volunteers who fundraise and run "China Community Days" each August on a three day weekend.  This committee is running a "House of Horrors" on October 29th and 30th and they are looking for people to dress creepy and assist with stations or stops along the route of the "tour".

That's what I can think of right off the top of my head.  Students can look at the website for China Lake Conference Center and contact the director, Shirley Chinn through that site for information on volunteer opportunities.  The conference center runs a variety of events year-round and I am sure they would welcome volunteers of every conceivable talent.  My husband and I have served as camp counselors and various work crews there.  It is a beautiful place right on the lake and volunteer labor really helps keep the place running!
