Alfond to speak at KVCC Commencement

Fairfield, ME –Kennebec Valley Community College has announced that William L. Alfond will be the keynote speaker at its 42nd Commencement Exercises May 19 at the Augusta Civic Center.

Commencement will begin at 10 a.m. at the Civic Center. A total of 470 degrees are expected to be presented to 466 students.

With his wife, Joan, Mr. Alfond created the William and Joan Alfond Foundation in 1986. The Foundation, of which Mr. Alfond is president, supports educational, healthcare, and other charitable institutions in Maine and Massachusetts.

A long-time supporter and friend of KVCC, Mr. Alfond is a son of the late Harold Alfond, founder of Dexter Shoe Company and a philanthropist well-known for his generosity to the Maine communities in which he and his family worked and resided.

KVCC President Barbara Woodlee noted these are challenging economic times, but said KVCC graduates have many advantages as they prepare to further their careers or continue their educations.

“This is a very strong graduating class with bright prospects for success,” Woodlee said. “Our graduates are well-prepared by their experiences at KVCC to enter the work force immediately or to transfer to four-year colleges and universities.”

Other upcoming events for the Class of 2012 include the Evening of Excellence at 7 p.m. on May 17th in the Carter Hall Multi-Purpose Room. This event recognizes outstanding student achievements and is open to the public. Students receiving awards are notified in advance of the event by mail so that they may invite friends and family.
