DESCRIPTION
The certificate in Computer Aided Drafting and
Design will provide the student with a background in the
fundamentals of drafting and sketching and present the opportunity
to develop state-of-the-art skills in CADD technology. The
curriculum will cover the principles, methods, and techniques of
computer aided drafting and design in various disciplines. Current
CADD technicians can upgrade their skills and competencies in this
technology.
This one-year AutoCAD certificate program will
provide the student with full professional level AutoCAD drawing and
print management techniques. Graduates from this one-year
certificate program are qualified for a variety of positions such as
design drafter, tool design drafter, technical assistant,
architectural drafter, and designer. The program includes
experiential learning in a work setting as an intern for a local
employer.
Students will be required to complete two courses in math
proficiency to include College Algebra and Trigonometry. Writing and
college composition skills will also be a required program
component. For the technical application pieces, the students will
be introduced to and will develop skills in the areas of AutoCAD and
drafting proficiencies.
PROGRAM MISSION
The Computer Aided Drafting and Design program
is a direct result of the College’s commitment to the needs of the
developing CADD technology in the region. The program is designed to
create a skilled and knowledgeable workforce for the drafting and
design industry, either by upgrading the skills of current employees
or increasing the number of skilled potential workers. The needs of
industries are diverse, so the program must teach the students to
adapt their entry level skills to the workplace. Adhering to
industry standards also ensures a versatile and well-trained
technician.
EDUCATIONAL OUTCOMES
Upon successful completion of the Computer
Aided Drafting and Design Certificate program, the graduate will be
expected to:
1)
Utilize AutoCAD’s mode settings, drawing aids, toolbars, prototype
drawings and shortcuts.
2) Interpret micro-based CAD hardware components and system
configurations.
3) Operate the CAD output devices (plotters & blueprint
reader/printers).
4) Develop the skills necessary to produce professional quality,
three-dimensional SOLID MODELING shapes using the AutoCAD software.
CAREER OPPORTUNITIES
Maine
Department of Labor projections indicate an expected growth in job
opportunities for CADD drafters in this region at an annual rate of
more than 10% into the next decade. Starting wage rates for CADD
drafters are typically at or above $20,000 per year. KVCC graduates
are likely to find state-wide employment as an entry-level drafter
in a variety of commercial, industrial, construction, and state and
local government agencies.
CRITERIA FOR GRADUATION
Students must complete 30 credits in the Computer Aided Drafting &
Design program and achieve a minimum grade of "C" in all core
courses (*). Students must attain a final GPA of 2.0 or higher.
